For centuries, a college education meant “going away to school”. It meant ivy-encrusted campuses, dorms and fraternities, and all-nighters at the library cramming for a chemistry test. But recently, prospective students are facing a new kind of college experience – online education. The purpose of this article is to inform students about some of the potential benefits of this new kind of college education in which students take classes and work toward their degrees over the internet.
1. Accessibility
Traditionally, if a student wanted a college education they had to relocate or commute to campus, reduce hours at work, or even postpone careers entirely. But not anymore. Online education offers the same quality education, the same courses, and the same degrees as traditional education but in a more convenient setting. With online education, you can get a college education on your schedule. All you need is a computer and an internet connection and you can go to college in the comfort of your own home.
2. Flexibility
In addition to being more accessible, online education is also more flexible than traditional education, especially for students who work. With online education, you can cater your courses, homework, and school correspondence around your work or family schedule. Study when you want and where you want. The flexibility of an online education allows you the ability to maintain your priorities and your income while still earning a college degree.
3. Work-Ability
Many people fear that starting or finishing their college education will interfere with their existing careers. Traditionally, going to college meant going to school full-time during the day, which made it difficult to work. Not so with online education. By going to school online, you can keep your current job and continue earning the money you need. Online programs allow you to take courses at your own pace, which in turn allows you the flexibility to work full-time or part-time while still maintaining a balance among work, school, and your social life.
4. Applicability
One of the oft-overlooked advantages of working while going to school is the potential applicability that studies may have on your job. In other words, it’s one thing to go to class and learn about something in theory, and it’s another to take that theory and put it into practice. Students who work can apply their newly acquired knowledge immediately to their jobs; they can also focus their studies on the kinds of real-world problems that professionals face daily in the workplace.
5. Speed
The accessibility and flexibility of online education makes it possible to shave months, even years off your graduation date. Motivated students can earn prestigious degrees online in half the time it would have taken in a traditional classroom setting.
6. Variety
One of the great myths regarding online education is that there aren’t enough degrees to choose from. Not true – at least, not anymore. Colleges and universities are now offering scores of degrees in a variety of different areas including business, criminal justice, education, engineering, health care, hospitality, law, liberal arts, science, and web design, to name but a few. Furthermore, within these areas you can obtain associate degrees, bachelors degrees, masters degrees, and other professional degrees in addition to a gamut of certificates and diplomas.
7. Cost
Finally, one of the most dramatic advantages of online education is the cost. Typically, the tuition of online programs is already less expensive than traditional programs. When you add in the potential savings associated with housing, transportation, books, and lost wages, the difference is enormous. Furthermore, if students continue to work while taking classes online, the need for student loans decreases, which greatly eases the financial strain of college after graduation.
Whether you experience college in a brick-and-mortar classroom or a virtual one, your education will be one of the most important investments you will make in your life. So as you prepare for this important decision, make sure you consider all the options, including the unique possibilities offered by online education. Whatever you choose, you are certain to have a genuine “college experience”, including more than a few all-nighters cramming for that chemistry test.

The online learning environment has been gaining a lot of following from students, teachers, and career persons, to the average Joe who is looking to for ways to improve. More people are realizing the benefits of online education because it allows mobility, flexibility, and a new set of teaching methods that can’t be introduced through classical education.
Online Education and the Flat Earth
In an ever changing paradigm of wealth management and financial freedom, information dissemination is the key. That is why free online education courses are flattening the world of information sharing and putting motivated people in a level playing field. Internet based education is an effective tool in dispersing the tenets of 21st century education.
The benefits of online education are endless. While the most important feature of this is time and geographical flexibility, it is also the factor that is taken for granted. This allows businessmen to sit down during their low hours and learn. Meanwhile students are given the incentive to apply for home schooling. For highly mobile people like tourists and business travelers, as well as soldiers or any jobs that require global travel, online learning is a friendly tool to keep improving. People who feel that they are stuck in a grueling 9-5 job will finally have an outlet where they can learn. Thus, kind of education puts knowledge and information from the center to every peer students.
Online education is also a “user-friendly” approach to information management. In this way, the student gets to have more leverage to assess the information for him and make his own impressions rather than be forced under a classroom structure set by the faculty. This allows students to feel a sense of accountability because they are encouraged to learn the way they choose.
Online learning does not require students to keep with the current pacing of the course. In this way, faster students who want to go ahead can do so, while students who prefer to study every material carefully without embarrassment can do so. This education puts the onus of interaction to the student instead of an environment moderated by the teacher. Students are therefore more susceptible to interact with the material and with the instructor; In addition to that, the democratic setting allows students and teachers to meet in a less intimidating setup. With this type of learning, camaraderie between students in online forum is emphasized and informal communication makes instructors more approachable.
Online Education and the Student Appeal
This student-centered approach allows students infinite flexibility while encouraging the creation of more convincing online education journals. Thus, we can say that the quality of information improves a lot under the online environment.
One of the many benefits of online education is its availability of education materials. While traditional learning requires the library and endless number of paper readings, this type of education puts the materials online. Thus, everything that is needed to learn is found online. Even better, the range of materials is limited only by the imagination of the instructor or the student. Web based education materials can take the form of journals, videos, podcasts, forum discussions, audio books and e-books. This method is an infinitely more personal and more organized form of 21st century learning.
The value of internet based education today is staggering. It represents a cultural shift and a change in attitude to classical education. Thus, the medium given by the benefits of online education allows revolutionary ideas like 21st century education to be formalized without the need for institutional approval. The internet has broken the classical structure and thankfully more students are seeing it that way. Online education and 21st century education is a perfect marriage indeed.

Any individual that has researched online education or training will no doubt be well aware of the possible disadvantages that choosing an online degree or training course holds over choosing to learn in an academic or technical institution. The majority of resources available will highlight the problems so everyone considering an online course will be aware of them before they enrol. However, the one thing that these resources fail to mention is the fact that the negative aspects of an online course can easily be avoided if you know how!
Some of the negative elements associated with taking an online degree need to be dealt with before enrolling on the course, some during online education and the remaining problems may only present themselves afterwards so you must be prepared. If you deal with them as they come then you will have no problems at all!
The first potential problem is the credibility of taking an online course. This actually refers to degrees from online schools rather than more technical or practical training courses that are often set up to train individual workers by the company that employs them. In order to avoid any problems associated with online degrees, the relevant checks should be carried out before enrolling in a program. The credibility of the online university should always be examined because there are too many schools that bear accredited status but have been given that status by a sister company. These universities and school are not valid and potential employers would discard any qualification given out by them.
However, there are online schools that are validly accredited, such as the University of Phoenix. Any good school will be happy to reveal the source of its accreditation, and this should actually be displayed on the homepage or the “about us” page. Having knowledge of the source would be an excellent idea for future job interviews and resume because this will give any qualification an impressive legitimacy.
A problem that you may be faced with during the course of your degree is the level of discipline that is required in order to complete all of the assignments and tasks that are a part of the course. You can prepare for this in advance by setting up a timetable that fits in well with your day-to-day routine. A schedule can be altered to fit circumstances at any given time but planning what you are doing well in advance would give you an edge over the lure of procrastination that you will most definitely face at some stage!
If you need a helping hand to ensure that you get all work associated with an online degree completed, then find a place to go when you find that you cannot work in the home. Some individuals may head to a local library, others a coffee shop, but every individual online student should choose the place that most inspires them to work. Of course, it is completely up to you to find that place. You could try several places before settling on the one that suits you best.
The final problem that you are guaranteed to face at some time or other is employer attitudes to online degrees. Although attitudes are changing, more conservative and traditional employers will unfortunately question you as to why you took an online degree instead of attending a campus-based course. Every online student should have a rehearsed answer that sounds natural and credible. Explaining personal circumstances is not enough. You should also justify the school of your choosing. This is where having knowledge of where the school was accredited and who by comes in useful. Your argument for completing an online course should also be backed up by a brief description of the classes taken and the skills and traits that you have picked up as a result, because these skills can be of use to potential employers.
Of course, there are other problems that will be associated with your online education, but this represents the three most pressing problems that you will have to deal with. Be prepared for them, as well as any others that come your way and you will almost certainly be able to turn any negatives into positives, and that is a trick necessary when completing an online education!
