Information on Online Education for the Teaching Profession

Monday, May 24th, 2010

. For those thinking of a teaching career there are many choices as to which area you can go into. Teachers have the ability to mould young minds, encourage students to make their own choices and become successful. The majority of people who choose to go into teaching do so for the love of it, to work with young people and to help society.

Being a teacher isn’t all easy, there are a lot of reports and other paperwork to be completed, planning and teaching can be stressful and teaching children exhausting. However there are just as many positives, for example the long holidays offered, a job that is motivating, and the pleasure you get watching an uncooperative child blossom.

Deciding on the kind of student you would like to teach, elementary, secondary, college, foreign students, etc. can be confusing. Volunteering or helping out at a summer school or your local nursery could give you a hint and some guidance. There is a huge difference teaching kindergarten to high school but they can both be gratifying in their own ways.

Once you have decided on the age level you would like to teach, you will need to find out the qualifications you need for teaching this group. Qualifications for teaching young children is quite different to secondary age and the last thing you want to do is to waste your time getting qualifications you can use.

Working in a high school, you generally need to specialize in a certain subject, such as math or history. Each state has different requirements so check with your local authority as to what qualification you need to gain for the area of work you are interested in and if previous experience can gain you credits.

Getting some experience as a teacher’s assistant is a good way to experience a typical teacher’s workload before venturing on this path yourself. You can see how the teacher interacts with their students and learn a lot from the opportunity. It can help you gain confidence and offer teaching opportunities that will develop your teaching style as well as looking impressive on your resume.

For teachers with qualifications and skill there will always be positions available. Teachers have to be able to think quickly, to capture the attention of a class of students and to motivate. It is important you know your subject and if unsure of any area you are teaching it will be necessary to revise yourself the night before or you will lose the confidence of your students.

Motivation and good communication are the key aspects to any good teacher. If the class is boring the student will very soon ‘switch off’ and learn nothing. Your aim is to make them want to know more about the subject you are teaching. You will find lots of colleges and universities offering courses that can provide the training you need to become a teacher.

There are also lots of opportunities to learn to teach online, or if you are already a teacher to further your career in this area. An online education degree can get you that job you want, and give you a better sense of worth as well as earning you a considerably higher income.

Online education degrees are offered at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate levels. If you are interested in a special certification or certificate, these can also be obtained at certain online schools. Go online and find teaching courses as well as teaching material and homework resources

The Changing World of Online Education

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

The way we learn is changing faster than ever before. With the Internet, digital libraries and online encyclopedias it seems as if all the world’s information is at our finger tips. This makes learning new things very easy and indeed is changing the way we view knowledge and education. Even traditional schools, colleges, universities and specialty schools are now using online strategies similar to those used in corporate training.

No longer will children with illnesses or injuries be denied their schoolwork, as they can do it all online. Online education has even more uses in such things as Home-Schooling or those wishing to go back and get a degree part-time working at their pace.

As distance learning grows more popular, parents are beginning to consider home education for their children. As the youngest generation grows up online, the future of education looks more digital than ever. Completing a course online gives young students a chance to discover the advantages of distance learning. As a result, more students are prepared for the online format, and more willing to take courses online in college. An online university student can learn something one evening and put their knowledge to work the very next day.

Online educational institutions are growing in number and enrollments because they offer the working class a chance to advance in their careers, develop a higher level of personal confidence, and fulfill life-long dreams.

In the past, working adults weren’t able to further their careers because of time restraints; including, but not limited to, working overtime, business travel, and caring for families. Online education takes away those time restraints by offering a completely virtual learning experience.

The Internet is moving well beyond e-mails and e-commerce. Predictions of an Information Age are proving prophetic as the information superhighway carries more and more vehicles transporting ideas opening the door to an education that may have been denied to many. Online education has resulted in thousands of virtual classrooms that offer the possibility for accomplishment and advancement for all.

In an age where everyone and everything is stretched too thin it is refreshing to know that the Internet provides legitimate resources that allow almost anyone to learn about almost anything. You can now feel confident that life and opportunity are not passing you by. Higher education is now available to any person with the drive, the desire and a personal computer.

Whatever your choice, if you have the opportunity to take an online course, do not ignore it. Life is a long-term learning stadium where you are given the tools that other generations would have appreciated.

Does an Online Education Fit Your Learning Style?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Statistics and facts for this article were found in “The Web’s Aspect on Student Learning” by Katrina Meyer, written for Technological Horizons in Education.

Online education is different from traditional education. When online education courses first evolved, they were close copies of traditional courses, delivered in much the same way, i.e.; via the reading of text. Now, however, online course designers have realized that online education is primarily a visual learning medium and are delivering course content through highly visual media, including pictures and video, which fits a visual learning style.

What Are The Types of Learning Styles? (Source: http://www.ldpride.net/learningstyles.MI.htm#Visual%20Learners:)

Visual learners learn through sight. They need to see the teacher’s body language and facial expression to fully understand a lesson. They prefer sitting at the front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions (e.g. people’s heads). They think in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, illustrated text books, overhead transparencies, videos, flipcharts and hand-outs. During a lecture or discussion, visual learners take detailed notes on the information.

New scientific studies have shown that if you learn through a visual learning style, online education courses may fit you better than a traditional program in a campus-based school. A typical online student will do well if he or she has certain skills and personality traits, such as:

* Learns visually,

* Is independent,

* Self-motivates,

* Has computer skills.

1. If you learn best by reading, studying diagrams, watching animations, pictures, and videos, or observing charts, you are a visual learner. Much of the information presented on the internet is presented visually, which is why it may be the ideal medium for you. In addition, your assignments and tests will be, for the most part, written, so that your visual learning style is the best for completing projects you will be assigned.

In recent years, the visual learning style classification has been modified somewhat and renamed the visual/verbal learning style. At www.metamath.com, it is explained. “The Visual/ Verbal Learning Style” You learn best when information is presented visually and in written format. In a classroom setting, you benefit from instructors who use a chalkboard (or overhead projector) to list the points of a lecture, or who give you an outline of a lecture. You benefit from information in textbooks and class notes. You like to study by yourself in a quiet room. You see information “in your mind’s eye” when you are trying to memorize. Learning Strategies for the Visual/ Verbal Learner (Source: www.metamath.com)

To aid recall, use “color coding” when studying new information in your textbook or notes. Use highlighter pens to highlight information in contrasting colors. Write down sentences and phrases that summarize key information obtained from textbooks and lectures. Make flashcards of vocabulary words and concepts that need to be memorized. Use highlighter pens to emphasize key points on the cards. The amount of information per card is limited so you can easily recall it and create a “mental image” of it. You can learn from material offered in illustrations or diagrams by writing out explanations of it. When learning mathematical or technical information, write out summaries in sentences and key phrases that are simplified. When a problem requires a sequence of steps, write out in detail how to do each step. Make use of computer word processing to speed up taking notes. Copy key information from your notes and textbook into a word-processed document. Use the print-outs for review. Before an exam, create visual reminders of information that must be memorized. Make sticky notes containing key words and concepts and place them in highly visible places –on your mirror, notebook, car dashboard, etc.

2. The independent learner is happy to work alone on projects and assignments. Most of your assignments will be done without input from other students, so it is imperative that you act independent and confident when it comes to completing projects on your own, without support from others. In fact, independent learners prefer working on their own rather than having to give support to other students and share grades with them.

3. The online education student will have limited contact with other classmates. In this situation, you must be self-motivated and have less need to rely on others for assistance. An important aspect of online success is the ability to encourage yourself to complete assignments and solve problems. 4. An independent learner is most likely to learn the computer skills needed to succeed in online education courses. The independent student has enough confidence to deal with occasional computer technical problems, as well. “With online education, we just turn the technology over to them {the students} and let them use it express themselves in their own unique ways.” Quote may be found at: http://www.netc.org/digitalbridges/online/symposium/quotes.php. If you are the type of person who hesitates to solve problems on your own, needs constant assistance from others, prefers to learn by doing hands-on projects or listening, or the use of manipulatives, then campus-based courses would be a better way to go. At a traditional campus, you will find others who have auditory and/or tactile learning styles similar to yours, with whom you can interact.

The key to success in online education courses is to make sure that your learning style fits the visual/verbal learning style needed for online education. You must be able to work at your own pace, independently, using visual media as your input. You must also be self- motivated and have enough confidence to solve problems as they occur. If you fit those criteria, online education courses are for you!
